But of course, there were as many slave states and territories in the Union as there were in the Confederacy and the Emancipation Proclamation of Lincoln technically did not free any of the slaves in the North. To be sure, slavery was a wrenching issue during the time. But, it was not why Southern states seceeded or why Lincoln invaded to keep them in the Union.

So, what was the war really about? Well, it was a combination of trade and tariff issues combined with the rising tide of ideological nationalism--all inflamed by the emotional rhetoric of "fire-breathers" on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line.

In God's good providence, the end result of the war was of course the emancipation of the slaves and then the torturously long journey of African-Americans toward civil rights. In many ways, it is a journey that we Americans are still on. But, all that has been an after-effect of the war, not a direct consequence.gileskirkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11546229381528820614noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123697.post-1153803137542680192006-07-24T23:52:00.000-05:002006-07-24T23:52:00.000-05:00Thanks for all the information. As a Canadian my American history is basic at best, and what I remember being taught many years back was that is was about slavery. I guess that reflects the lack of depth in the teaching of history of countries other than your own.Rileysownerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17212451614350376972noreply@blogger.com
