If I were teaching a foreign language -- any foreign language, or even English grammar -- I'd have my students read Twain's piece on "The Awful German Language." You can find it here:

http://tinyurl.com/34bs53

And then there's "On the Decay of the Art of Lying":

http://tinyurl.com/2r5cv9

Occasionally I'll read one of these or another to a friend or relative, and I try to keep my poker face. Impossible. I can barely get the things read because I'm laughing so much.Paul Buckleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00459773683801196282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123697.post-19075313356069585372007-08-20T16:42:00.000-05:002007-08-20T16:42:00.000-05:00Troy- That is a great story. Perhaps it was just the power of the word, rightly divided.......One of my favorite Twain quotes is...."God has made man in his own image, and man has returned the favor." Ahhhh Twain.Jason Parolinihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07379988863116662820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5123697.post-61999681602869730612007-08-20T09:37:00.000-05:002007-08-20T09:37:00.000-05:00Mark Twain had a close encounter with the gospel i...Mark Twain had a close encounter with the gospel in New Orleans, LA through his friend and Presbyterian novelist George W. Cable. Cable convinced Twain to go with him to the Sunday morning worship service of his church, First Presbyterian of New Orleans, pastored by Benjamin Morgan Palmer.
Twain later remarked that being in that service was the closest he had ever come to heaven. Cable accompanied Twain on his speaking tours where he would read selections from his novels that centered on the Creole culture in Louisiana. Cable tried incessantly to get Twain to go to church with him on Sunday in whatever city they found themselves on tour. Twain always refused, and became increasingly irritated at Cable's appeals.
I wonder what it was about the worship service at First Presbyterian in New Orleans that affected Mark Twain to such a degree as to be almost persuaded?Troy Lizenbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02097427088469195403noreply@blogger.com
