On
this day in 1941, "a day that will live in infamy," a surprise attack by Japanese forces at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, thrust the United States into the conflagration of the Second
World War.
At anchor in the harbor
was nearly the entire United States Pacific fleet. In the attack that lasted for just over one hour, several
ships were sunk, two hundred airplanes were destroyed on the ground, and almost
3,000 people lost their lives.
Seventy years later, Americans still remember--with solemn resolve, gratitude, and hope.
My mothers brother , my uncle, was killed at Pearl Harbor. Mom recounted that at only 3, she remembered another brother telling the family that America was at war, only later to find out that during this infamous day their family had lost her mothers favorite son.
