I'm no fan of Wagner's music...not surprisingly, he was a utilitarian, a ruthless anti-semite, and the favorite composer of Hitler.

Hey, don't forget C.S. Lewis had some of his early hints of "northernness" (sehnsucht, longing) — that turned out to be an echo of Joy once he found it — in Wagner's music. It is still there if you have an ear for it. Wagner is a perfect example of the way our Creator can convey his rich, soul-deep beauty through a wretched human instrument. Lewis also reminded us that we shouldn't hold Hitler's taste in music against Wagner (!).
