The Dream

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. I have a dream.”
--Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Question: I read your biography of Theodore Roosevelt. In light of the fact that he was a strong Christian, do you know why he was the only president not sworn in on the Bible? Just curious.

TR was sworn in during a hastily arranged ceremony following the assassination of President McKinley at the Wilcox Mansion in Buffalo, New York following an all-night carriage and train ride from the Adirondacks. At the last minute, Mrs. Wilcox was unable to find the family Bible and so a pocket New Testament was clasped by the Vice President instead. Following his outright election in the 1904 race however, he made certain that such a difficulty would not be repeated. He was sworn in holding his father's Bible open to Micah chapter 6.

Thank you so much for your response; in typical manner, the news had reported that TR was the only president not sworn in on the Bible. It would be interesting to know if the Lincoln Bible, or something else, was used when our current president was sworn in the second time this week.
